Straw: the value workhorse
Woven straw is the lightweight party classic and by far the cheapest per unit, which makes it the default for high-count events — Cinco de Mayo crowds, festival giveaways, big weddings. It takes a printed hatband beautifully and a screen-printed crown well. The trade-off: it’s less formal and less weather-durable than felt, though our tighter weave holds up far better than dollar-store versions.
Wool felt: the premium standard
Felt is structured, dressy, and photogenic. It’s the charro/mariachi silhouette, holds its shape, and is the best base for embroidery and metallic trim. Choose it when the hat appears in styled photos or functions as a real gift — upscale weddings, hospitality, premium activations. It costs several times more than straw and is worth it when the audience and cameras matter.
Velvet: the showpiece
Velvet over a felt body is the most luxurious option — deep jewel tones, metallic trim, maximum stage presence. It’s reserved for galas, VIP tiers, and performances, usually in smaller, curated quantities. It’s the priciest and least weatherproof, so keep it indoors and for evening use.
